A spark of new hope

aktuhin | 3 March 2013 5:13 pm

The one thought that I cannot purge, as I am sitting cross-legged on the street at Shabagh square and chanting death to the collaborators, is this: what will happen when all these war criminals are hanged? Will this put an end to the bickering politics, unbridled corruption and all other looming crisis that the nation is facing? And then, I have this epiphany: what is happening now could be the long-awaited youth awakening to build a beautiful Bangladesh. Details…

In fact from the elementary level we grow up learning that, “life is not a bed of roses .” But is it only me who finds life so easy? Or it’s actually easy? I am referring to the life that is totally wrapped up with the internet! Details…

Terrorist attack on Malala and the politics of war on terrorism

S. M. Rayhanul Islam | 17 October 2012 9:23 pm

The shooting of 14-year-old Pakistani children’s right activist Malala Yousafzai on a school bus in the Swat valley has been denounced worldwide. Peace-loving people around the world have been offering prayers for this brave girl’s quick recovery. Why did the terrorists, the so-called Talibans, attack this innocent teen? What were Malala’s wrong-doings? The answers of these questions are very clear. Malala gained fame for blogging about how girls should have rights in Pakistan, including the right to education. Her writings encouraged the young people to take a stand against the Taliban. Details…

Allot land to landless

Romel Barua | 15 September 2012 8:56 pm

Because there are provisions to allot lands to landless in Bangladesh, this has been a political matter. Though Bangladesh government had laid down laws to allot lands to landless, there is misuse of law. Khas Khatiyan is included in Number one Khas Khatian. Details…

Of US - CHINA Relations,South Asia and the Race for Supremacy

Of US-CHINA RELATIONS, SOUTH ASIA and the Race for SUPREMACY
— SYED MUHAMMAD HUSSAIN

I

As I was about to write on an update on my observations in an earlier article on ”United States,China and India - a study in South Asia dynamics for Bangladesh” (5 March,2012/bdnews24,com/blog/en)., I came across two fairly interesting quotes- one- ‘You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing- after they have tried everything else.’ And the other one’ A cynic is one who while smelling flowers looks around for a coffin’. I should hasten to add that I love the Americans, I really do and I am not a cynic, not always. It is also true that the USA is still in their first phase of ‘trying everything else’ as far as the affairs of the world and those of their own (mostly in their view co-terminus) go. And it is also not incorrect that there are lots of coffins turning up here and there where they tread. One must give credit where it is due. Quite a few young deads are very much their own. The world does mourn such senseless losses whenever and wherever they occur. The trails of pains and anguish are well-known and universal tragically begging an answer for the question -why it is necessary to make these happen? Details…

Right to food, shelter, clothing, education and health issue

Because you had laid down in Art. 15 to ensure right to food, shelter, clothing, education and health you did not make it a mandatory provision. For the violation of fundamental rights like equal opportunity and discrimination, one can sue against the state in Higher courts to retain those. In Bangladesh the GoB does not need to obey it, as it is not a fundamental right.

There was drawback. There were many debates relating to this economic social and cultural right. The debate was inaugurated by the Russians, and later the Chinese. Many sates tried to obey right to life comprising these rights. Details…

Several platforms of demonstrating teachers and employees of educational institutions which are not covered under the monthly payment order on Sunday started a nonstop sit-in programme for MPO benefits.

The teachers refrained from taking classes and tests to take part in the demonstration in a bid to force the government to accede to their demand.

“We had no choice but to enforce nonstop sit-in programme as the government did not take any step to meet our demand,” - said President of Council Mohammad Hanif Ullah.

According to the teachers’ leaders, there are 7,000 educational institutions across Bangladesh, with nearly 115,000 teachers and employees, which are yet to come under MPO.

Riton Das

Saddat Hossain | 3 September 2012 1:52 am

riton-das-400-224.jpgRiton Das is a fifteen year old boy from a village at the banks of the Halda river near the Kalurghat bridge, Chittagong. He belongs to a fishermen community. His father Shapon Das is a fisherman; so was his grandfather. On the other hand, his mother Laxshmi Das and his four elder sisters are employees in a garment factory. Whereas other children were playing at the front-yard near the river, Riton was doing his homework. It is astonishing that at this age he would be at least studying in the ninth grade but he was rather studying in the fifth grade in his school, at the time this photograph was taken. He said that there has been a prolonged gap between his academic affairs but did not state the reasons behind it. After the situations settled down, he had urged to study again and so had to go through the lower academic grades again. However, Riton shared that neither he wants to spend his whole life in the fishermen community nor he wishes to follow the trails of his family. He studies hard because he dreams to become a doctor.

Of interim/caretaker government, political wisdom and nation’s future

Syed Muhammad Hussain | 24 August 2012 4:52 pm

This article sets out the rationale and role of an Interim / Caretaker government that would provide the consensual coverage principally for the forthcoming national Elections. There are some suggested adjustments to the size and term of office to be more effective in delivering its mandated responsibilities. These basically include all the legal, financial, administrative, security arrangements as well as the total support to the Election Commission to organise all electoral procedures, schedules, and all physical facilities for the conduct of the polls nationwide. The need for creating awareness and maximum participation of the voting public has been examined. Details…

Production (creation) of space

Siddhartha | 11 July 2012 6:32 pm

As you know most of the communities (such as Bengali) in this sub-continent (Indian) are covered by ‘Culture of Poverty’ (Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody seriously condemn or ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst politico-governance, bad work place, weak mother language, continuous consumption of common social space (mental as well as physical, both).
