Remembering our ancestors: why and how?

BIJON B. SARMA | 7 May 2012 8:08 pm

ancestors_family_tree_0309_01.jpgHave anybody ever seen an animal to do something to indicate ‘the animals endeavour to remember its ancestor?’ In the animal world parents or better ‘pairs’ are seen as instrument for breeding. Even though initiated exactly with ‘animal-like culture’, men later deviated and developed a very different type of culture. The human culture differs from that of the animals in numerous aspects. Some of these are : (a) Marriage, (b) Taking care of the elders, (c) Cumulative storing of knowledge and experience, (d) Aspiration to be better, (e) Endeavouring to remember the ancestors etc. Details…

As we prepare to take part in this year’s holiday, we would like to invite you to re-examine with an open mind and an open heart some aspects of how it is celebrated. Details…

Cakes and Ale

Cakes and Ale
Somerset Maugham in his ‘Cakes and Ale’ has shown through the character of Rosie that loose morals and goodness of heart can go hand-in-hand but nowadays I find some writers  who are terming marriage as an institution of torture on women. Actually it is not the system but the materialistic mindset of the people that is behind all ills. Loss and gain of this world should not worry us. What should worry us is the thought of death and the life hereafter. But when most of the people want only the sexual gratification from marriage, the problem occurs. I agree that most young men and women all over the world enjoy extramarital sexual relationship.  But that does not mean that kind of gratification does not create any problem. The epidemics of AIDS and violence all over the world are the direct result of promiscuity. Can we deny it? To solve this problem, I think we should reintroduce the contractual marriage which was permissible during the holy prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).  Only then we can mix cakes and ale with morality and legality.

Sarkozy labels burqa symbol of enslavement but ignores women’s subjugation in secular liberal France

mahbub | 29 June 2009 11:03 am

In a speech to the French parliament last Monday, President Nicolas Sarkozy made clear his views towards the burqa describing it an unacceptable symbol of women’s enslavement. He said “The burqa is not a religious sign; it is a sign of the subjugation, of the submission of women. I want to say solemnly that it will not be welcome on our territory.”

It is laughable that Mr. Sarkozy talks of enslavement of women while he is married to Carla Bruni, a former nude model – a profession that many women consider as the embodiment of female enslavement to men. Details…

Obama’s words will not hide America’s ugly face of Colonialism

When the European conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt as part of his quest for world domination, he told the people: “You will be told that I came to destroy your religion; do not believe it … I have more respect than the Mamelukes for your God, His Prophet, and the Koran” and many more sweet words besides. A Letter from Iran

mahbub | 25 June 2009 2:38 am

The Western media machine has gone into 5th gear. We are being told that the world is on the brink of another colour revolution, another dictator will be thrown into the dustbin of history and freedom loving people can expect moral support from the liberal West.

Iran is once again witnessing mass demonstrations and such Ipod loving, rock and roll dancing, Twitter people want to free themselves from the conservative shackles of their forefathers who continue to rule the country. This was the narrative I was sold growing up in the UK about the country my parents were from. Details…

Why has the Muslim world made no Contribution to Science and Technology?

mahbub | 14 June 2009 2:39 pm

Islam is a complete way of life revealed for all of mankind, from the time of the Prophet (pbuh) until the Day of Resurrection. It encompasses rules for every sphere of life including spiritual, economic, social, judicial and political. As Islam came from the Creator of the universe, it is a superior system, free from the inconsistencies and disparities, which riddle man-made systems such as Capitalism and Communism.

With this in mind, we may expect the Muslim world, whose population follows Islam as a religion, to be at the forefront of development and science, as they have at their disposal, a flawless system to regulate their affairs and drive them forward. However, what we find instead is that most of the Muslim world labours in poverty. Details…
