Parvez Babul | 14 May 2012 5:56 pm

stop_violence_against_women_by_gryphon09.jpgThe women, facing violence by their husbands/inmates, die many times before their death! Moreover, the rate of violence against Bangladeshi women in abroad is beyond the imagination. In most cases victims are helpless there, for many reasons as in foreign land. I have tried to portray a simple picture of violence against Bangladeshi women in abroad to realise how endless inhumane lives they pass, and even killed! Details…

The saga of Selina

Abdus Subhan | 23 May 2011 4:05 pm

Today (23 October 2009) I visited Selina’s place. First I visited Selina’s mother. The house she lives in looked as haggard and rough as their careworn bodies. The hut is stuffed with cheap furniture. Selina’s mother got busy preparing snacks for me. I wondered how they all live in such a meagre accommodation.

Magrib Azan was going on so I stood to say my prayers. As the floor was unplastered and dusty, she spread a sheet on the bed covered with torn bed sheet and oily old pillows. The fan almost touched my head. So I had to bend forward while praying.

The institution of marriage and its history are as long and varied as the history of human race. Many dynasties rose and fell, notable novels and poems were written, and wars were fought over the issue of marriage. Laws were introduced in different parts of the world to protect the institution of marriage.

Unfortunately, in Bangladesh, marriage has often become a source of crime and violence, and even for the transmission of diseases. According to statistics of the Bangladesh police, 69,801 cases of cruelty against women were registered between 2003 and 2007. Most of these cases were in some way related to marriage or sexual desire. Details…
