Youth

A spark of new hope

aktuhin | 3 March 2013 5:13 pm

The one thought that I cannot purge, as I am sitting cross-legged on the street at Shabagh square and chanting death to the collaborators, is this: what will happen when all these war criminals are hanged? Will this put an end to the bickering politics, unbridled corruption and all other looming crisis that the nation is facing? And then, I have this epiphany: what is happening now could be the long-awaited youth awakening to build a beautiful Bangladesh. Details…

Our Youth Our Future

S. M. Rayhanul Islam | 8 December 2012 10:28 pm

There is a saying that ‘History is written by the old but made by the young’. Youth is the most valuable time of a person’s life. Youth is a guiding force for change. Hopes, dreams and futures of a nation are reflected through the young people. Our youths played a historical role in the Language Movement of 1952, the Liberation War in 1971, and also the Anti-autocratic Movement in 1990.

At present, the youth constitute one-third of our total population. But our parents, teachers and social workers are worried of our youths. Many of them think that youth means a person involved in eve-teasing, terrorist activities, taking drugs or deviated student politics. No doubt, in an era of rapid social degradation this is true. But it is one side of the coin. Details…

In fact from the elementary level we grow up learning that, “life is not a bed of roses .” But is it only me who finds life so easy? Or it’s actually easy? I am referring to the life that is totally wrapped up with the internet! Details…

Riton Das

Saddat Hossain | 3 September 2012 1:52 am

riton-das-400-224.jpgRiton Das is a fifteen year old boy from a village at the banks of the Halda river near the Kalurghat bridge, Chittagong. He belongs to a fishermen community. His father Shapon Das is a fisherman; so was his grandfather. On the other hand, his mother Laxshmi Das and his four elder sisters are employees in a garment factory. Whereas other children were playing at the front-yard near the river, Riton was doing his homework. It is astonishing that at this age he would be at least studying in the ninth grade but he was rather studying in the fifth grade in his school, at the time this photograph was taken. He said that there has been a prolonged gap between his academic affairs but did not state the reasons behind it. After the situations settled down, he had urged to study again and so had to go through the lower academic grades again. However, Riton shared that neither he wants to spend his whole life in the fishermen community nor he wishes to follow the trails of his family. He studies hard because he dreams to become a doctor.

Crush the coaching business!

Abdus Subhan | 2 July 2012 7:34 pm

20120614-tution-460.pngI was imagining this scenario - My sons and daughters have stopped going to several private tutors rather they are rising early in the morning. They will say their prayers peacefully without any thought of going to the private tutors chasing them at that pristine time. After the prayer they will read religious books to recharge their moral domain. Then they will browse internet to read daily newspaper to keep themselves abreast of the happenings from home and abroad and write their feelings on social network websites to share their high ideals with others and be inspired by others high ideals and feelings. Unfortunately, after four decades of independence, the quest for equality in access and opportunities has remained elusive for the education system of Bangladesh. People from poor socio-economic and marginalised groups are not enjoying equality of educational opportunities. Truly speaking, they are excluded from all level, primary to university, of our educational planning. Details…

Who are you to tell me we are not EQUAL?

Mehzabin Ahmed | 2 June 2012 12:54 pm

men-v-women-600x699.jpg“We are three sisters!” I answer as my acquaintance asks back in reiteration, “You don’t have a brother?” I answer, “No” as I wonder for the zillionth time why people don’t ask boys whether they have a sister. Details…

Inequalities in our primary education

S. M. Rayhanul Islam | 19 May 2012 11:05 am

girl-writing-blackboard.jpgPrimary education is very important in our national life as this is the basis of building up a skilled citizenry. This stage is also the path to include the whole population within the education system. So, creating equal opportunities and ensuring access of all sections of children to primary education irrespective of ethnicity, socio-economic conditions, physical or mental challenges and geographical differences are the major concerns for any sustainable educational planning. Delivery of quality primary education is always ensured in an effective educational system as this stage forms the foundation of subsequent secondary and tertiary levels of education. Details…

Creative exam or creating teaching-learning?

S. M. Rayhanul Islam | 13 May 2012 7:31 pm

education.jpgA record-breaking number (86.37%) of students came out successful at the SSC and equivalent exam this year. Achievers of GPA-5 also increased markedly this year. The Education Minister has rightly said ‘The record-breaking pass rating is an outcome of creative exam system and special caring incentives of the government’. No doubt, our boys and girls are meritorious and laborious and they try to give their full efforts in studies. Details…

An incident, a scam, few over reacting people, a virtual mess and a letter

amritanabikhan | 12 May 2012 1:54 am

Dear All,

It is said that a man has to raise voice whenever there is a nuisance is happening, or else it’s going to spread and may become unstoppable later on. Very recently, I mean to say this afternoon, saw a post on my homepage regarding ULAB ( University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh). The Facebook Page admin of Oprokashito Shotto used the logo of ULAB to spread a news all over. Details…
