Why do women have to do all the protection work for themselves?

Sanam Amin | 27 January 2013 8:09 pm

Shiv Sena, who in my mind are India’s version of National Socialist German Worker’s Party, has decided to act and do what they can to protect women – by arming them with knives and chilli powder. They claim to have already handed out 21,000 knives, and will distribute a total of 100,000.

It’s great that they’ve thought of something to do to change the danger that women face from the world, and I won’t lie, I too considered carrying a switchblade when out on the streets. But friends pointed out that a blade can be easily snatched or forced out of my hands and used on me instead, if someone did come up to me with the intention of attacking me in some way. I instead invested in pepper spray, and any time I find myself out alone after dark, I open it up and keep it ready to spray at anyone who comes too close. It doesn’t stop me from being frightened, though, when I realize that the car behind me has been moving along my path slowly, and not overtaking me. I usually tell myself that they might be looking for a particular house number, but I can never fully dismiss the fear in me, because it happens too often to be a coincidence. Maybe some boys do it for fun, to see where the girl is walking to. (Or maybe their intentions are darker, but I won’t stop to find out.)

Mostafa Kamal was a Sepoy of the 4th East Bengal Regiment. At the start of March, 4th Regiment was moved from Moynamati Cantonment to Brahmanbaria. After the incidents of 25 March, 4th Regiment successfully brought Brahmanbaria under control. Under the leadership of Major Shafayat Jamil, they revolted against the Pakistani officers and formed a Defense Camp at Brahmanbaria. 4th Regiment continued their battle against the Pakistan Army and eventually arrived at Aakhaura.

At Aakhaura, the 4th Regiment set their camp in Gangashagar and Talshahar. To avoid any unexpected attacked from the Pakistanis, 2nd Platoon of the company “Alpha” was sent to Daruin village. Propaganda against the army of Bangladesh

Alapbangla | 18 March 2011 6:57 pm

I had a chance to talk to some of people about the BDR mutiny in Bangladesh and I was shocked to see a lot of negative emotion or impressions about the army of Bangladesh. Most people categorically states that the army of Bangladesh has become corrupt and they are doing all sorts of wrongs. While I could respect their opinion, I have to say someone is feeding wrong information to these people and their conspiracy runs deep. Even the bloody acts against the army officers could not sway their judgment on the army.

Then I came across the article Lies about Bangladesh Army, conspiracy and responsibility of the Nation (www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/92690) where the writer tried to depict a clear distinction about why people have negative feelings about the army. There was some obvious propaganda against the army. The only motivation behind it is to make Bangladesh a bottomless basket and present as a rogue state. One recent example as the writer put forward is: Details…

Why Bangladesh lost to West Indies so badly

Abu Saeed Khan | 13 March 2011 9:14 pm

The match was held at Mirpur stadium. The venue is merely a kilometre away from the head office of Grameen Bank. Muhammad Yunus has millions of members in Grameen Bank. They are very upset as the government wants to push out Yunus from the Bank’s top position. The rural ladies, including the phone ladies, united and organised “bat-ball chalan” across the country. This is traditional rural black magic of Bangladesh. Nevertheless, they recited the “mantra” and sent it through voice-SMS to a designated number, which was located at Grameen Bank head office. An Apple i-Phone, rumoured to have gifted by Hillary Clinton to Yunus, was used in this case. That smart device was held facing the Mirpur stadium. The mantra, pronounced by millions of Grameen Bank borrowers, traveled to the stadium and paralysed the Tigers (not the real ones in Sundarban). Therefore, Yunus has to be blamed for our cricketers’ disastrous performance. Cheers!

Giraffes are one of the most attractive animals that the National Zoo (situated at Mirpur, Dhaka) has. People of all ages are curious to meet these tall-necked guys. More than a year ago when a few giraffes were bought from South Africa and caged in the zoo, the number of visitors rapidly increased.
I too was also keen to meet them in person! So, avoiding the rainy weather, I went to the national zoo with a digital video camera to take some clips of the guests. In fact, my purpose to visit the zoo was not only see the giraffes but also take some photos and collect some information about them as well as about other newly-brought animals, so I could write a short report on it. To know about the Bangladesh Genocide in 1971

Someone someone | 9 July 2009 12:08 pm

Genocide in Bangladesh, 1971

“…… we were told to kill the hindus and Kafirs (non-believer in God). One day in June, we cordoned a village and were ordered to kill the Kafirs in that area. We found all the village women reciting from the Holy Quran, and the men holding special congregational prayers seeking God’s mercy. But they were unlucky. Our commanding officer ordered us not to waste any time.”

The death penalty: a strange philosophy

William Gomes | 22 March 2009 11:07 am

By William Gomes— “There’s no proof that the death penalty deters crime. It’s a strange philosophy that the state should kill to encourage people not to kill.” This is how Massachusetts State Representative James B. Eldridge argued against the death penalty. When Mother Theresa visited California’s death row in 1987, she made a very simple appeal against the death penalty, asserting, “What you do to these men, you do to God.” Details…

The Importance of English in Bangladesh

Azmi J | 1 March 2009 12:05 pm

This post relates to Bangladesh’s continuous struggle to be more recognized throughout the world. Not many people know about Bangladesh nor do they care. The reason is not because it’s Bangladesh, but because they can’t learn anything about it due to language barrier. One of the greatest obstacles which I see in Bangladesh is the lack of English language medium all throughout the country. Details…
