Govt on alert over Rohingya intrusion: Tuku
Tue, Jun 12th, 2012 6:40 pm BdST

Dhaka, Jun 12 (bdnews24.com)—State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku said on Tuesday law enforcers and border guards were on alert to stop refugees from Myanmar intruding into Bangladesh.

The junior minister briefed journalists about the situation when Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group from Arakan State, are fleeing ethnic violence in that country and trying to take refuge in Bangladesh.

After a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Tuku said they were trying to resolve the problem through dialogue between diplomats.

He, however, mentioned that emergency assistances including medical attention were being provided to those who have already entered Bangladesh.

Border Guard Bangladesh has intensified patrol along the Bandarban and Cox's Bazar borders. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a separate statement said that local administration and law enforcers along the have been put on alert.

The fresh inflow of refugees from Myanmar began after a riot broke out between Buddhist Rakhine and Islamist Rohingya at Mongdu district in Rakhine province.

Bangladesh is already finding it difficult to deal with about 25,000 Rohingya refugees intruded into the country in the last two decades. Most of them are staying in inhuman condition at refugee camps in Teknaf.

Many of them have managed to move to other places for a living and are allegedly involved with crime.

Myanmar government did not respond when Bangladesh on Sunday demanded that Rohingyas be taken back to their homes.

No militancy

After attending a meeting of the committee to prevent militancy and find remedy, the State Minister claimed, "There is currently no militancy in Bangladesh, people are relieved."

He added that awareness programmes in the villages to resist militancy will be taken; each mosque would give a minute-long speech against militancy on Fridays.

In addition, a campaign is ongoing at all educational institutions and in the mass media to resist militancy, he added.
