Dhaka, Jun 13 (bdnews24.com) – A man has been arrested in a case filed against him in connection with Tuesday's shootout at Sarak Bhaban in a bid to establish supremacy for getting tenders.
The arrestee was identified as Abul Kalam Azad.
Officer-in-charge of the Shahbagh Police Station Sirajul Islam told bdnews24.com that they arrested him from Tejgaon area in the city around 2:30am on Wednesday.
At least five people, including Publicity Secretary of the Central Swechhasebok League Shamim Shahriar, were injured when a group owing allegiance to the ruling Awami League attacked another at the Sarak Bhaban, the hub of the country's communication administration.
Golam Azam Mamun, a listed contractor of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on Tuesday night accusing at least 24 people.
In the case, the plaintiff mentioned names of Azad and three other accused – RHD's Collective Bargaining Agents (CBA) leader Kamaluddin Khandakar and Md Fazlur Rahman, office assistant of the department, and one Md Rafique.
Towhid, a Swechhasebok League activist and an associate of Shamim Shahriar, said there was a long-standing dispute between the activists of the Swechhasebok League, the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League, and the Sramik League.
