Sylhet bridge repair work underway
Sun, Jun 17th, 2012 12:58 am BdST

Sylhet, Jun 16 (bdnews24.com) – Road links on the Sylhet-Companyganj highway remained suspended on Saturday as a bridge on the road had collapsed on Friday night.

The Roads and Highway Department said the repair was underway but added that it would take another two to three days for the bridge to become fully operational.

Superintending Engineer of the Sylhet Division Roads and Highway Department, Shah Mohammad Musa said they were working fast to complete the work.

Six trucks, a microbus and a three-wheeler auto-rickshaw fell to a ditch when the bridge crumbled on Friday.

Divers recovered a dead body from the spot before the rescue operation was called off for the night. The local administration has resumed the rescue work on Saturday.

Meanwhile, hundreds of stone-laden trucks got stranded at Bholaganj's Pathar Koari area as the road link remained snapped.

Rescue operation ran until 12:30am on Saturday. The body of one Abdul Hoque, 40, who hailed from Ghoramara upazila of Companyganj, was recovered.

The Companyganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam told bdnews24.com that the operation was temporarily called off as the divers did not find any more dead bodies underwater.

He said the process to recover the vehicles that fell into the river was underway.

Assistant Director of Sylhet district's Fire Service and Civil Defence Parimal Kundu said it was becoming quite a task to continue the rescue operation due to a lack of necessary equipment.

Incessant rain is also obstructing their work, he said.
