Over 1.22 lakh loan defaulters in country

Dhaka, Jun 24 (bdnews24.com) — Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith informed parliament on Sunday that the country has over 1.22 lakh loan defaulters.

The number of loan defaulters stood at 1,22,437 until Mar 31, he said.

"The number of pending cases of loan default is 32,440 against 1,22,437 individuals until last Dec 31," Muhith told parliament while replying to a question from MP from reserved seat for women Rehana Akhter Ranu.

Of the private commercial banks, the Finance Minister said, Brac Bank topped the list with 29,203 loan defaulters.

Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank stands second with 20,005 defaulters.

Replying to another question from Zafrul Islam Chowdhury, Chittagong-15 constituency lawmaker, Muhith said the government took a loan of Tk 1404.6 billion through treasury loans and bonds from 2008-09 to May 20 of 2011-12 fiscal.

He claimed that government had already paid back Tk 928.83 billion of the loan money.

"The government took a Tk 475.77 billion from banks," he added.
