Narayanganj, Aug 7 (bdnews24.com) – A local unit leader of the ruling Awami League-backed student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, was allegedly chopped and shot dead by the supporters of the party's youth front, Juba League, at Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj district on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Rasel, 24.
His mother Samsunnahar Begum, President of the Mohila (Women) League of Kanchan municipality unit, also received bullet injuries in the attack.
Samsunnahar Begum told reporters that a group of assailants numbering 15 to 20, armed with firearms and sharp weapons, stormed into their house at 10:45pm on Monday in a bid to kill her younger son, Rashidul Islam Rana. Local unit Juba League supporters Safiq Mia, Abul Hossain, Nayan and Rabiul were part of the group.
On failing to get Rana, she claimed, the armed men dragged her elder son Rasel outside. They chopped him indiscriminately and pumped around six bullets into him.
Rasel received two bullets in his back while his mother received another when she came to the son's rescue.
Locals rushed Rasel to the local Bhulta Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 1:30am.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of the Rupganj Police Station Atiqur Rahman Khan told bdnews24.com that the agitated locals blocked the Gazipur-Madanpur road for three hours on Tuesday morning, demanding arrest of the killers.
They withdrew the blockade after local lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi rushed to the spot and assured them of arresting the killers.
The body was sent to the Narayanganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The victim's mother had filed a case accusing 10 people in this regard, the police official added.
