Lightning kills 13 in Sunamganj

Sunamganj, Aug 11 (bdnews24.com) — Lightning strike in Sunamganj district's Dharmapasha upazila killed 13 people and injured 15 others on Friday night.

Dharmapasha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahidul Islam has confirmed the deaths.

Locals said the incident took place at Sharshatipur village as the devotees were coming out after offering Tarabih, a special prayer for the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, around 9:30pm.

The deceased have been identified as – Badshah Mia, 14, Nur Islam, 50, Taher Ali, 54, Akik Mia, 55, Nazrul Islam, 55, Hazrat Ali, 22, 'Ripon', 20, 'Manik', 20, Nurul Islam, 24, the mosque's imam Shahab Uddin, 55, Maznu Mia, 28, Gafur Mia, 75 and Nur Mia, 55.

Chairman of Jayashri Union Parishad Mohsin Ahmed told reporters that several people died on the spot while others died on their way to a hospital.

Dharmapasha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bayes Ahmed said the injured were being treated at the upazila health complex.
